Training Dogs… Do You Get Really Frustrated When…?

by admin on Mar.01, 2010, under Main Site

…you put a LOT of work into training your dog, and then your guests come over… completely ignorant on how dogs think, and blow your training out of the water?!
I have a great dane puppy, and because of the size he will grow to be, it’s imperrative that he is trained right. People come to my house, and let him jump all over them, bit their fingers, pull on the leash, jump in their faces, and they don’t make him sit to be pet. No matter how many times I explain to my friends, they just DON’T GET IT and they keep on! I sit here and grit my teeth. My dog isn’t learning to respect my guests because of it.

How Do I Train My Dog To Walk Past Other Dogs Without Flipping Out?

by admin on Feb.27, 2010, under Main Site

I have a 6 year old golden retriever who thinks he’s 6 months old! He’s pretty well trained at home but once we’re on the other side of the fence he turns into a big goofy dog.
We walk along a boardwalk regularly and there isn’t enough room to steer clear of other dogs so I’d like to be able to train him walk past them with some manners and dignity!
Can anyone help with some training tips?

Training Dogs And Problem With Parents?

by admin on Feb.26, 2010, under Main Site

i’m asking in two different areas. I hope that’s not against community guidlines. I read but didn’t see anything if it is.
Anyway, my parents are now owners of 2 GSDs females. 1 spayed, 1 unaltered. Both 1 yrs old. My brother adopted both dogs and found that he didn’t have the time or patience for them, so my mom kept them (she was pestering him for them anyway lol).
But they’re a bit much for her as well. She went out and got an electrice fence for the youngest. Fine, it worked. I was against it but it did work.
They’re issue is, the dogs won’t listen to my mom, dad, or my younger brothers. My parents think that forms of punishment (pinch, electric colpors, etc) are the answer.
However, I’ve been trying to tell them about positive training. I had a lot of good results whne I used it with my dog before he passed. They won’t listen. They went to a trainer that uses pinch collars, both dogs still won’t listen. they just looked confused and scared.
I can get them to listen to me though. Both dogs will walk beside me, sit, laydown, come on command the first time I say it to them. I don’t even use treats anymore, I just pet them and make a big deal going “Good girls!” over and over. Get them all worked up so they’re like “OMG this is awesome, we do this and look what happens?!”
But when I come over every weekend I hear the same thing “Can you go get the dogs for me? They pulled hard the other day and my shoulder hurts” or something along those lines.
WHY WON’T THEY LISTEN? I even pritned off articles about it and they STILL spend all this money on products that don’t produce results. They even go to a groomer to trim and bathe the dogs when I have all the equipement to do it, I’ve told them I would for free, and yet they go else where.
what do I do? I hate seeing my parents hurt and I hate seeing those dogs look so confused and upset like that.

Training Dogs To Do Tricks?

by admin on Feb.20, 2010, under Main Site

There are lots of things I want to train my dog. For a few weeks I’ll just let him be a carefree puppy, then start working on sit etc.
Most of the people I Know have only ever taught their dog to sit and maybe lay down and that is it. Dog training classes only teach the basics too.
Are there any really amazing tricks you can teach a dog and how could you teach them. For example in the paper once was a dog who could use a cashpoint and another who would go to tesco each day to collect the shopping, They had not been trained to be guide dogs or anything, it was only what their owners had trained them. Neither of these two things interest me but teaching him to switch on and off a light switch would be handy etc or to fetch different items like a hairbrush etc
Thanks!

House Training Multiple Dogs?

by admin on Feb.18, 2010, under Main Site

I have 4 inside dogs, ages 9, 4, 2, and 6 mos. I am having a difficult time teaching them to go potty outside. They also chew up furniture, shoes, clothing, papers, etc. I have tried buying doggie toys, sprays to keep them off the furniture, etc. I love my dogs and do not want to let them go, but my family is rebelling against me! My husband says it is the dogs or him. How do I successfully train the dogs to go outside, and not destroy my house?

Training Dogs = Humanizing Them?

by admin on Feb.15, 2010, under Main Site

So yesterday I was at a dog carnival doing an OB(Open level) & Agility performance with Amber & when we were done, we just stood around & talked to people who were surrounding us, asking us questions about how I trained my dog, bla bla bla & some were complimenting us & THEN, there was this couple who walked passed us & the husband said to his wife, “These people are stupid. Humanizing their dogs. Sheesh. Stupid people.” They did not say it very loudly but loud enough for me to hear. They were pretty close behind us. I was kinda like baffled to what he said! At that point I wanted to stop them & tell them that training dog is NOT about “humanizing” them. Training opens up a world of communication with us & our dogs! Training is not about making them “humans”. And I think by not training your dogs, it is cruel. You know what, I can go on & on about this but my answer is going to pretty darn long.
So I just want to hear what you guys have to say. Is training really all about “humanizing” our dogs?
Sheesh, obviously these people never own a dog before or they do own a dog but have NO idea about training. These guys are in dire need to be educated…
